SUBJ: DIPLOMATS EXECUTED
FOLLOWING ARTICLE HAS BEEN FOUND IN THE EVENING INDEPENDENT, DATED AUG 11, 1984, CONCERNING SUSPECTS IN THE KILLING OF LONDON POLICE OFFICER YVONNE FLETCHER AT A PROTEST IN FRONT OF THE LIBYAN EMBASSY AT ST. JAMES SQUARE ON APRIL 17, 1984:
'LONDON (AP)--Four of the 30 Libyans who returned home after a 10-day siege in their London embassy last April have been executed because the shooting of a British policewoman made their country look bad, the Daily Express reported today.
The British tabloid quoted an unspecified intelligence report as saying the four were executed for crimes against the state after a secret trial. The paper said the report identified the dead as Dr. Omar Sodani, Ali Abuzieh, Matouk Matouk and Abdul Ghadir Baghdadi.
The paper stated: 'Officially they were found guilty of failing in their objective while 'on active service' in Britain--to seek out and quell activities of Khadafy dissidents in exile.
But the report makes clear that their real crime lay in the reckless shooting which left 25-year-old (British) Woman Police Constable (Yvonne) Fletcher dying in the road."
